The waters around Marathon are rich with blackfin tuna, sailfish, lots of snapper and grouper, as well as many other species of fish. The nature of the waters around Marathon allows for different styles of fishing for a different species of fish in different areas. There are of course the offshore expeditions which allow you to reel in the big catches such as tuna, dolphin, and marlin. Then you have reef fishing opportunities for snapper, grouper, and mackerel. There are also wreck fishing spots the hold permit, snapper, and giant grouper. Inshore activities are there too for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Marathon has a variety of bridge fishing too.

The Seven Mile Bridge is known to be an excellent spot for tarpon fishing. This is typically done with live bait and is more suited to the seasoned fisherman who wants a challenge and can handle a long fight and some tricky boat moves around bridge pilings.

There are still a few tarpon guides around that offer a no hook, no pay deal. This gives you an idea of how rich the waters around Marathon can be with certain species of fish. A typical fishing charter will give you the option of a half-day or full day on the water. Do a little background research on the captain of a charter before you decide which one to book, and choose one who you get along with and who specializes on your style of fishing. The technical expertise of the captain as well as a vast array of local knowledge make fishing with a guide a real good idea for visitors who want to make some good happen on their fishing trip.

Keep in mind that different charter captains and outfitters specialize in different styles of fishing and run a variety of boats, choose one that is a good fit for you and your family.
