Marathon Airport
Facts and Information

The Marathon airport was originally a naval base built during the Second World War. These days it serves mainly as a hub for private aircraft entering the Florida Keys.

The airport serves as a gateway into one of the most popular and luxurious vacation spots in the U.S. The airport is situated about 3 miles to the east of the center of the city of Marathon.

Layout

A single 5008-foot by 100-foot runway is located adjacent to Highway US-1 that stretches the length of the Florida Keys. The runway is aligned ENE by WSW and is designated as Runway 7/25. It has a GPS RNAV approach to each end and an NDB approach to the airport. These approaches don’t need to be used often as clear weather abounds here.

Marathon’s central location in the Florida Keys makes it an excellent entry point for private aircraft. You can enjoy the scenic views from the air as you enter the Keys from above and then simply take the highway in either direction to get to other spots around the area for fishing, dining, diving or golf.

Fuel Services

For the convenience of private plane owners there is a self-service unit for aircraft refuelling that operates 24 hours a day. During normal business hours fuel can be obtained from a pair of FBOs serving the field.

Airlines Flying to Marathon

Over the years Marathon Airport has been served by several major airlines. However, this service has been intermittent in nature with a particular airline staying for several months and then terminating all service with little or no notice. Recently Cape Air and Gulfstream International, both owned by Continental have been providing service. Check with the airlines for the latest information.

Charter Services

Marathon has several private charter services available for travel or scenic flights. Some of these services offer specially tailored vacation travel packages for families and small groups. Others specialize in local tours using classic aircraft.

Other Amenities

For such a small town the airport does have an impressive terminal building. When airline service is in operation here the terminal will house the gate security checkpoint area and other airline services like ticket counters and baggage claim. The terminal also has a number of car rental services and shuttle buses that run to nearby hotels. There is also plenty of free automobile parking at the airport.
