Florida Keys CampingIn the Florida Keys camping opportunities exist throughout the island chain. You’ll find a variety of campgrounds here that offer everyone from tent campers to RVers a great way to experience the real Florida Keys.
Most camping in the Keys takes place from November through May when our weather is best for camping. Temperatures are comfortable and rain is infrequent. You will find many Florida Keys campgrounds operating at peak capacity during these months. The campground crowds mostly vanish in summer because of the heat and rain, the increase in mosquitoes probably has a bit to do with too. But if you're a hardy soul you'll be able to pick and choose your campground and campsite. Many Florida Keys campgrounds have campsites that overlook the Atlantic or a connected bay or Florida Bay or the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Often you'll be able to find guided and/or unguided hikes, kayaking, canoeing, or birding activities. Picnicking and fishing are fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Please note that a Florida fishing license may be required. Breathing in the natural habitat of the Florida Keys is one of the advantages you’ll have when you camp close to the plants and animals that live here. Mangrove swamps, rockland hammocks, and seagrass beds are all essential to the well-being of Florida fishes and wildlife so please use great care in preserving these fragile resources. Pets are allowed at most campgrounds; however, they are not allowed in cabins. Usually a pet must be kept on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet and be well-behaved. There may also be pet restricted areas at certain campgrounds. Typically at a state park campground each campsite can accommodate up to two vehicles and a maximum of eight people. At privately owned campgrounds these rules may vary from site to site. For your safety and protection it is best to review campground rules at the park ranger station or office. Each park may have rules or regulations specific to that campground. Here in the Florida Keys most state parks that allow camping will open at 8:00 a.m. and close at sunset, 365 days a year. The maximum stay is usually 14 days. Long-term campers are normally issued a gate code or other method to get in or out of the campground after hours. | ||||
