Key West Naval Air Station
History, Modern Usage, and Base Amenities

The Key West Naval Air Station is a feature of the area that many tourists notice, but few get to see up close. If you visit Key West you may spy the Combined Bachelors Quarters of the Air Station with the words “Fly Navy” printed on the side, it is the tallest building on the island and visible from a long distance.

The military presence in Key West has been on-going for many, many decades. Today this air base plays a specific role in the continued security of the United States as a fighter training base.

Civilians can access the base during the annual airshow in April. The Navy Flight Demonstartion Team, the Blue Angels, usually perform.

History of the NAS Key West

The establishment of the first navy base in Key West is closely tied to the presence of piracy in the area. At that time Key West was one of the richest cities in the United States and was filled with many rich shipping merchants. This wealth combined with the treacherous surrounding waters made the area teem with pirates. In 1823 the U.S. government established a naval presence in an attempt to combat this growing problem. The naval facilities in Key West also saw plenty of action towards the end of the nineteenth century when it served as the base for the Atlantic Fleet during the Spanish-American War.

Modern Day Use of the Naval Air Station

The station, also known as Boca Chica, is these days considered to be a top spot for training among navy fighter pilots. The advanced combat training system that exists at the base and in nearby coastal waters makes it a prime spot for practicing tactical aerial combat. Training runs are recorded in real time and played back to students after the flight so that they can see their own actions from the outside and discuss particular points with their instructors.

The actions and training at the base are carried out in harmony with the surrounding area. The waters surrounding the air station comprise part of a local marine wildlife sanctuary.

On Base Amenities

There are several nearby attractions that personnel stationed at NAS Key West can make use of for entertainment during free time. As well as on-base facilities which consist of a:

  • Bowling alley
  • Marina with kayak rentals
  • Restaurant

The Air Lanes Bowling Center is a ten-lane bowling alley with a full bar as well as rooms for hosting events. This is the only bowling alley in the lower half of the Florida Keys, so this provides a privilege for the military that most civilians in the Keys don't get to enjoy.

On Midway Avenue you will also find the Boca Chica Marina. This is a great spot to relax when you get the chance, as you have access to a beach lined with huts and a cabana. You also have the opportunity for a variety of water sports, with a local kayak rental service as well as slips for docking boats.

For a night out and a pleasant meal on base at the Key West Naval Air Station, you'll find the Navigator's Grill restaurant is located at the marina. With a full bar, this is another good place to consider for your next party or celebration.
