Key Largo ParksAs a community we enjoy several Key Largo parks located on our northern most Florida Key's island. Key Largo also provides easy access to the southern boundary of Everglades National Park via small boat. Everglades National ParkCovering over 1.5 million acres Everglades National Park is the third largest national park in the lower 48 states. The southern boundary of ENP lies just a few hundred yards north of the island of Key Largo and borders much of the island. This area, comprised of shallow water flats and bays dotted with hundreds of small mangrove islands, covers about a third of the park. It stretches for miles to the north and west. You can explore this fisherman's paradise with a flats fishing or eco-tour guide or on your own small boat. Key Largo Community ParkKey Largo Community Park is a county facility located on several acres in the Port Largo neighborhood of our island. The park is centrally located one block off US1 on the oceanside of the highway at MM 100. A padded walking/jogging track and VITA course run along the outer boundaries of the park. It has basketball, tennis, and handball courts as well as a skate park with ramps the kids will love. The greatest attraction here is the three-pool Jacobs Aquatic Center. The Center has a competition and diving pool, a children’s pool with pirate ship and sprinkler/spray gym, and a handicap accessible pool that is 3-4 feet deep. Daily and term pass rates are charged for children, youth, adult, and family. Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State ParkThe Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is another one of our Key Largo parks that is a favorite with both visitors and residents. Before it was protected this area along State Road 905 was slated to become a large condominium development. Today the park is home to a number of protected plant and animal species including the American crocodile. A few locals claim a Florida panther has taken up residence here too. Normally open every day of the year the six miles of backcountry trails allow visitors to get an up close look at its beauty. Right now the park is closed to hiking for restoration work. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State ParkAt MM 102.5 you'll find the entrance to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Designated in 1963 this park protects a large portion of the nearby coral reefs, sea grass beds, and mangrove areas found in the warm tropical waters offshore. Landside the park offers boat dockage, camping, hiking trails, swimming, picnicking, and a 30,000 gallon saltwater aquarium. Snorkel and dive tours take you to shallow water reef areas offshore for exploration. John Pennekamp Park can get crowded on weekends and holidays so plan to arrive early to avoid long lines at the gate. | ||
