Insider's Guide to Key Largo Hotels

There are a number of Key Largo hotels to choose from for visitors to the Dive Capital of the World, and although they may seem similar at first glance there are significant differences.

You will find everything from small quaint Mom and Pop hotels to brand name resorts. We have highlighted some of the important hotel features that will likely play a role in determining just how much you enjoy your fabulous Florida Keys vacation.

Some of these characteristics could make the difference between the trip of a lifetime and a mediocre holiday. Use them as a guide to decide what is important to you and your family when you choose a Key Largo hotel.

Location

Key Largo may seem fairly small making a specific hotel location seem unimportant, you should note however that the island is actually 33 miles long with no real defined city.

Another location consideration should be bay or ocean. A hotel located on the Atlantic side of the Keys will have a sunrise view while properties on the bay will have beautiful sunset views. There will obviously be issues with proximity to other things like water attractions and restaurants that may or may not be nearby.

Room Size

This is another important consideration, especially if you are travelling with your family. An active couple on a trip may not spend much time inside and will be satisfied with a smaller room. But if you are travelling with youngsters, especially teenagers, it is important that you all have space to spread out and have privacy. Another factor related to the size of the room itself is the size of beds, you will find that most beds in hotel rooms in Key Largo are queen or king-sized.

If you are travelling with your family, you might want to consider booking a suite with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, especially if you're used to having a separate bathroom from the kids at home. This can help to ease tensions that can spring up when a family is thrown together in a smaller than normal space. You don’t want your holiday ruined because of squabbles over who has the longest shower, so check out the options for a multiple bedroom suite at an number of Key Largo resorts.

Should you choose a Mom and Pop operation for your stay I’d advise asking specifically about room size. There are a few hotels in town with rooms so small two people can't pass the bed as the same time.

Amenities

On top of normal in-room essentials, you should also consider the proximity and style of the closest restaurants and check the menu to see if it suits the tastes of you and your family.

Most hotels in Key Largo also have one or two large outdoor swimming pools and a Jacuzzi which is open to all guests. Some suites come with a private Jacuzzi. You'll also find a handful of the larger hotels in town offer workout facilities, an onsite restaurant, both inside and outside bars as well as other specialized guest amenities.

Family-Friendly Environment

Some hotels and resorts are designed to appeal to an older crowd while others are more suited to young families. Generally you will find Key Largo to be a family friendly area, however one should note that many hotels have outside bars serving alcoholic beverages located near pool areas. Parents of small children may want to consider this when selecting a hotel.
