What are Florida Keys Schools Like?

Our Florida Keys Schools are an eclectic mix of culture and outstanding educational programs that combine to promote excellence in our local Monroe County Schools.

For the 2007-08 school year, our school district achieved the highest GPA in the state at 3.92. Twelve of our 13 schools scored an A with the remaining school scoring a B. Students, staff, administrators, teachers and parents are all responsible for the incredible success.

Florida Keys Schools include 5 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 3 K-8 schools, 3 high schools, 3 charter schools, and 3 centers. The total number of students is over 8,000. Of that, approximately 20% are receiving exceptional student education services.

Ethnicity is about 58% white, 26% Hispanic, 10% Black, 4% multi-racial, 1% Asian, and less than 1% Indian.

There are over 1200 staff members working at our schools and approximately 78% are female and 22% are male.

Our local schools offer a supportive and dynamic environment that welcomes students and encourages them to reach their maximum potentials. Many of the teachers have moved here from other states and a few are natives of Florida and the Florida Keys.

Each school has a unique culture. Site based leadership is endorsed; this gives each school principal a great deal of authority, control, pride and personal interest in their schools.

Students, teachers, staff and administrators alike are relaxed and happy while they are at school. The warm weather, sunshine, and deep community connections make investing in education at our neighborhood schools a joint effort that all take seriously.

To support our schools there are programs like "Adopt-A-Classroom" where donors form partnerships with the teacher and students by providing both financial and moral support.

Just 4 Kids is a community program that assists needy children with clothing and even emotional support for those experiencing difficult times such as the loss of a parent, homelessness, or illness.

Each Florida Keys School offers a variety of school themed events and extra-curricular activities including music, art, and sports.

Even though Monroe County Schools stretch the length of the Florida Keys, the district is a tight knit group of individuals that strive to go the extra measure to do their best to meet all the needs of our youth.

The public school system also supports our local college. The main campus of the Florida Keys Community College is in Key West, some classes are also available at a Middle and Upper Keys Campus.

Florida Keys Community College offers many programs unique to this area and environment.
