Florida Keys Family Vacation TipsIs a Florida Keys family vacation an affordable option today?
Definitely. After all, where else can you feel the rhythm of the Caribbean without leaving the country? The colorful pink, orange, green, purple, and blue homes and shops cheerfully invite you on a journey into island life. Let the lush flora sweep your Florida Keys family away to the tropics. The variety of cultures and slow pace makes you want to grab your swimming suit, lose your shoes, and sink your toes into the warm ocean waters. Options to think about if you desire inexpensive travel and entertainment with your children are the many federal, state, and community parks located in and around the Fabulous Florida Keys. One choice of many in the Upper Keys is Key Largo Community Park. It's free if you want to pack a picnic, jog the track, or use the skate park. A family of four can use the Jacobs Aquatic Center, with its three pools, for $21.00 per day or $25.00 for a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday. If you are campers, John Pennekamp Park has sites for tents or RV’s. Picnic areas and grills are provided. Snorkeling, scuba, and glass bottom boat tours are available for a fee. Biking on the trail along US 1 is another option if your children are at an appropriate age. Traffic is rather heavy so make sure you have helmets, plenty of water, and safety rules with you. Museums and the wild bird centers are educational and exciting. The entry fee is reasonable and sometimes free.
A guided tour of the Turtle Hospital in Marathon is $15.00 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 4-12 years. Tours start at 10:00, 1:00, and 4:00. Reservations are needed so be sure to call ahead. The Dolphin Research Center, located at MM 58.9, has interactive programs like “Trainer for a Day” or “Researcher for a Day.” The admission fees are $19.50 for adults, $16.50 for 55 years and older, and $13.50 for children ages 4-12 years. Discount coupons are available online so be sure to plan ahead. Swimming in the water at Anne’s Beach along US 1 is a great choice also and it’s free. The water temperatures remain warm year-round.
