Duck KeyDuck Key is a petite 300 acre natural island. It is characterized by ornate bridges, deep canals, and fabulous estates with well groomed lawns and tropical gardens.
This Key is connected to US1 by a single road bridge at MM 61. The view of the island is picturesque with its landscaping, pillars, and decorative stone entrance.
George Gauld named this area in 1775. In a Spanish land grant, this property was given to Don Francisco Ferreira. Later the land became part of the United States. It wasn’t until 1951 that this area began to be developed when Brian W. Newkirk purchased it or as some say won it in a golf game. This community offers resort life for both visitors and residents alike. Gated communities on some parts of this lovely island offer additional privacy to homeowners seeking an exclusive island paradise. It is common to see golf carts, boats, and pedestrians enjoying the beautiful neighborhoods in this segment of the Fabulous Florida Keys. Hawk’s Cay Resort, located on the island, has its own beach, swimming pool, 2 full service marinas, dive shop, tennis courts, world-renowned sailing school, and affiliate membership to the nearby 18-hole golf course, Sombrero Country Club. Other island services include a bank, salon, jewelry shop, clothing boutiques, and general store. |
